Pseudomonas aeruginosa mutants lacking the gamma-glutamylpolyamine synthetase PauA2 are inhibited for growth by spermine. Mutations in phoU suppress spermine toxicity and lead to pyocyanin overproduction. The spent medium (top row) of strains carrying a phoU mutation (three strains on right) displays a greenish-blue coloration indicative of pyocyanin, as confirmed by its characteristic color after extraction with chloroform (middle row) and with acid (bottom row).
