The parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma brucei contains a non canonical protein translocase in the outer membrane of its mitochondrion. A 3D reconstruction of the insect stage form of the parasite (obtained by serial block face scanning electron microscopy) illustrates the network-like mitochondrion (green), basal body (white), flagellum (purple) and DNA (blue).
