The surface of an Escherichia coli macrocolony biofi lm as visualized by SEM showing bacterial cells (blue) and the extracellular matrix (amyloid fi bres, exopolysaccharide and other biopolymers; grey). A polyphenol compound from green tea is shown to inhibit biofi lm formation by reducing the production of curli and cellulose and interfering with amyloid curli fi bers. For details, see the article by Serra et al. on pp. 136-151 of this issue.
