Unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) can inhibit bacterial conjugation, which is powered by a set of ATPases that energize plasmid relaxation and unwinding, DNA transfer, pilus biogenesis and transport. In the conjugative plasmid R388, UFA function as non-competitive inhibitors of the TwrD ATPase that participates in pilus biogenesis. For details, see the article by Ripoll-Rozada et al. on pp. 912-921 of this issue.
