CagA is the only known effector protein of the Helicobacter pylori Cag type IV secretion system, and a dominant pathogenicity factor for development of gastric cancer. Quantitative determination of translocation efficiency into gastric epithelial cells using a β-lactamase-derived reporter system reveals molecular details of CagA recognition as a secretion substrate.
