Bacterial iron homeostasis is often regulated by regulators of the Fur family, including in Bacillus subtilis both Fur (left; modeled on PDB 3MWM) and PerR. Resistance to iron (yellow) overload is conferred primarily by induction of a newly assigned iron efflux P1B-4-type ATPase, PfeT (top, represented by a P1B-type ATPase from L. pneumophila PDB 4BBJ) with a secondary contribution from the Fe sequestration protein MrgA (right; represented by E. coli Dps; PDB 1DPS). For details, see the article by Guan et al. on pp. 787-803 of this issue.
