The System CaO-NiO-SiO<sub>2</sub> A reconnaissance of the system CaO-NiO-SiO<sub>2</sub>, reveals an extensive primary field of NiO extending as far as the metasili-cate join and to temperatures below 136O°C. There is a narrow ternary field of Ni<sub>2</sub>, SiO<sub>4</sub>, and a small ternary field of CaNiSi<sub>2</sub>, O<sub>6</sub>, which is compatible in the solidus with SiO<sub>2</sub>, CaSiO<sub>3</sub>, Ni<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>4</sub>, and NiO. The four ternary melting reactions thereby generated occur from 1340° to 1360°C, but the relative temperatures were not determined. Nickel oxide is compatible in the solidus with Ca<sub>3</sub>SiO<sub>3</sub>, Ca<sub>3</sub>, Si<sub>2</sub>O<sub>7</sub>, and Ca<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>4</sub>. Many features of this system contrast with other systems containing CaO, SiO, and one of the oxides MnO, FeO, COO, ZnO, or MgO; these differences are discussed.
