Green tea and its anticariogenic effects.

Abstract

Brief Background Green tea and some of its components, mainly catechins, have been shown to have properties that suggest an anticariogenic activity. Green tea has a direct bactericidal effect against Streptococcus mutans, prevents bacterial adherence to teeth and inhibits glucosyl transferase, thus limiting the biosynthesis of sticky glucan. Also, it causes inhibition of human and bacterial amylases. Recent human studies suggest that green tea may contribute to the promotion of oral health. However, although all the evidence from research on green tea is very promising, future studies are necessary to fully understand its contributions to oral health.
