Tandem Nursing: A Review and Guidelines.

Abstract

The benefits of breastfeeding are well known among healthcare practitioners with health, emotional, and psychological benefits abounding. This article discusses tandem nursing, the practice of nursing two children of different ages concurrently, and intends to examine its benefits, risks, and contraindications with specific concentration on the health and emotional benefits of continued nursing beyond the first six months. The article also presents relevant nursing experiences and essential understandings to healthcare providers, mothers, and expectant mothers, including advantages and challenges of tandem nursing, particularly that of the older child.
