Abstract

The terpenoids in cotton contain a unique group of secondary metabolites, which include desoxyhemigossypol (DHG), hemigossypolone (HGQ), hemigossypol (HG), gossypol(G), and heliocides H1, H2, H3 and H4 ( H1-4 ). These compounds have been shown to be important in protecting the plant from cotton insects. An HPLC method has been utilized for separating individual terpenoid and quantitating gossypol in cotton leaves. Some influencing factors, such as extracting and pre-treating process, were discussed and a set of simple, rapid method was developed. At the same time, the result of the UV-visible spectrophotometry (aniline method) was described and compared. The results showed that HPLC analysis was more reasonable for the insect-resistance investigation in cotton.
