Abstract

Turmeric is one of the highly esteemed assets of nature that finds most respectable place in Indian, Chinese and south east Asian tradition, culture, kitchen, religion, and healthcare. The turmeric of commerce is dried and processed rhizomes of Curcuma longa, an allied member of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). It is native to Southeast Asia, most probably western India, where used for at least 8000 years or even earlier as prestigious condiment, dyestuff and medicine. The resurgence of interest in medicinal and nutraceutical properties of turmeric besides its use as culinary and dyestuff, is much realized. This review article is therefore an attempt to summaries nutraceutical and therapeutic values of turmeric in view of worldwide interests and demands of natural products in nutraceutical and therapeutic industries.
