Abstract

Sexual assertiveness, sexual-esteem, and disposition toward sexual fantasy were evaluated as individual sexual characteristics in a group of 307 consecutive women reporting secondary hypoactive sexual desire. Sexual assertiveness and sexual-esteem did not predict women's subsequent compliance with self-help assignments or their rate of improvement during the first 12 weeks of orgasm consistency training (OCT). These findings suggest that women who are sexually assertive and have a positive sexual-esteem are not better candidates for OCT than other women, and these two sexual characteristics do not predict treatment response to OCT. In contrast, women's disposition toward sexual fantasy was correlated with the degree of treatment improvement during the first 12 weeks. Disposition toward sexual fantasy and compliance with self-help assignments made separate and additive contributions to clinical improvement in female sexual desire. Further exploratory study into how individual sexual characteristics and other motivational factors influence the sexual response of women is indicated.
