Abstract

Open bite is one of the dento-maxillary anomalies in which the relationship between the jaws is affected in the vertical plane. It is often discovered during childhood, being easier for parents to identify it, especially when it is located anteriorly. Given that it is an anomaly in which many muscle groups are affected and vicious habits are involved, there are two currents in terms of treatment: the orthopaedic and orthodontic interceptive approach during growth, with often two-stage treatment, or waiting until the end of growth and perform an orthodontic-surgical treatment. This aim of this article is to describe the non-surgical treatment of a young patient with anterior open bite, in whom the two-phase interceptive approach has been shown to be effective. The treatment of a 7-year-old female patient with a severe dento-alveolar open bite was made in a conservative way. The initial correction of etiologic habits was done with an upper mobile appliance with a crib, followed by a second phase with a bimaxillary fixed appliance. The conclusions are that, even in very difficult open bite cases, if the treatment is started early and the patient followed through adolescence, the results are successful and stable.
