Abstract

Herbal medicine is the oldest and most commonly used medicine in different parts of the world. Cyperus rotundus belongs to the Cyperaceae family. This medicinal plant was extracted by different solvents and its active moieties were identified by using various techniques like TLC, GCMS and NMR. Based on the literature, this plant possesses medicinal properties such as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, analgesic, antipyretic, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, lactogenic, hepato-protective activities and antioxidant effect. The plant contains plenty of phytochemical constituents such as flavonoids, flavones, steroids, tannins, carbohydrates, glycosides, proteins and alkaloids. The lactogenic, antidiabetic and anti-obesity properties of the plant will be helpful to formulate an herbal galactagogue for obese and diabetic breast-feeding mothers. Further research work has to carry out in this proposed objective.
