- Abstract
Introduction: Nowadays, oral and perioral piercings are often seen in dental offices. Objective: The purpose of this literature review was to update dentists' knowledge about oral and perioral piercings. Material and methods: A search (without filter) was made, in June of 2019, in Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE) database using the following keywords: "mouth" AND "body piercing" AND "body modification, non-therapeutic". The Portuguese keywords "boca" and "piercing corporal" were also used at the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde database, whereas the last term is not indexed in Portuguese language. Results: This search resulted in 124 articles. After exclusion of duplicates, the following criteria was adopted in the sequential order after reding the titles and abstracts. The next step was to exclude articles that covered the same subject (types of study or case reports). The main considered tiebreaker fator was the comprehensiveness of the article. This literature review utilized 39 articles. Descriptive studies reported that the individuals with oral and/or perioral piercings do not have knowledge about possible complications of this pratice and also do not know how to mantain ideal piercing and jewerly hygiene. Conclusion: Oral health professionals should be able to guide individuals with oral and/or perioral piercings to remove and discontinue this practice, due to potencial medium- to long-term complications to the stomatognathic system. These professionals should also guide the individuals that even so do not wish to remove their piercings about local hygiene and alert them to not develop deleterious oral habits due to the use of this adornment.
