Evaluation of Fluoride Uptake and Release by Glass Ionomer Cements after Exposure to Tea.

Abstract

Fluoride release from glass ionomer cement reduces with time but can take up fluoride from the oral environment when exposed to higher concentrations and re-release it. As tea a widely consumed beverage is naturally rich in fluoride, this study was conducted to compare and evaluate the fluoride uptake and release by conventional GIC and RMGIC after exposure to green tea, black tea, and regular tea. Cylindrical specimens each of GIC and RMGIC were individually placed in plastic containers containing 2 mL distilled deionized water for aging. Fluoride release was analyzed at 24 hrs, I, II, III, IV, and V week after which, each group was divided into 4 sub-groups of 6 specimens each and exposed to distilled water and freshly prepared 5 minute infusions of green tea, black tea, and regular tea respectively. The fluoride released was analyzed at the end of VI, VII, VIII and IX week. Data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA and posthoc Tukey's test. Both GIC and RMGIC showed substantial fluoride release (RMGIC > GIC) at 24 hours which reduced to lower levels at the end of Vth week. The recharging efficiency of black tea was found to be greater than green tea and regular tea due to its higher fluoride content. Both GIC and RMGIC showed substantial fluoride uptake (GIC > RMGIC) from all the teas.
