Abstract

The convenient, admirable passage of blood, bypass of first pass metabolism in liver, easy reformation and permeability profile of oral mucosa are the ideal properties that make it an effective site for delivering the drugs locally and systemically. Technical advancements like mucoadhesives, controlled and sustained release of drugs and improved drug delivery systems increases the efficiency of delivery of drugs to cure oral and systemic diseases. Transmucosal delivery of emergency drugs and agents becomes preferable route. Moreover, technical advancements are bringing forward the probability of delivering the biological agents by mucosal route. The diagnosis and management of oral ulcers which involves the topical and systemic therapy is the objective of this review. The therapeutic efficacy, conventional treatment and recent advancements for the oral ulceration are discussed. The discovery of potential role of biological agents in the treatment of oral ulceration is also discussed. Guidance is given indicating the recommendation of patients having oral ulceration to an oral physician/surgeon for more investigations, including biopsy if required.
