Abstract

Objective: To carry out an epidemiological characterization of Chilean men diagnosed with breast cancer. Material and method: A descriptive statistical analysis was carried out in male patients with breast cancer discharged from different Health Services between 2012 and 2018, using information obtained from the database of the Department of Health Statistics and Information (DEIS) and the National Statistics Institute (INE). Results: 497 cases of male breast cancer were reported in Chile. The annual prevalence is in a range between 0.56 to 1.11 cases per 100,000 men. The highest prevalence of the period was found in the Valparaíso region with 0.089 cases per 1000 men, followed by the Magallanes region and Chilean Antarctica with 0.082 cases per 1000 inhabitants. The Arica and Parinacota region registered 0.020 cases per 1000 inhabitants, being the region with the lowest prevalence. 41.25% (n = 205) were concentrated between 45 and 64 years, followed by 31.79% (n = 158) by the group between 65 and 79 years. The fatality rate varies between 2.08% in 2012 to 7.89% in 2014. Discussion: Our research showed a relationship with the few previous studies in terms of number of cases and prevalence, highlighting a higher prevalence in the regions of Valparaíso and Magallanes. Along the same line, an increase in the case fatality rate was observed compared to previous studies; however, these results should be interpreted with caution, taking into account the size of our study population compared to other national studies..
