Abstract

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the study of the intestinal microbiota in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) children, and the possible implication of gut-brain axis in the etiology of ASD. Current literature comes with impressive data regarding the possible relationship between intestinal flora abnormalities and how these changes impact brain development through increased neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. The aim of this article is to present the current knowledge on the link between intestinal flora and the brain as a bidirectional communication pathway and how intestinal microbiota changes could be involved in the pathogenesis of autism.
