Abstract

Tamsulosin is a drug used in Spain since the late 1990s for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. In the early 2000s, antagonists of the a-adrenoreceptor, especially tamsulosin, began to be used off label, in the elimination of kidney stones located in the distal part of the ureter. This presents a-adrenergic receptors that are blocked by tamsulosin, producing relaxation of smooth muscle and inhibition of peristaltic activity and thus facilitating the elimination of stones. Medical expulsive therapy (MET) has been supported by many clinical trials and meta-analyzes performed. Both the American Medical Association of Urology and the European Association of Urology have recommended its use, depending on the size of the stone, but in recent years new clinical trials have appeared that call into question the efficacy of tamsulosin. A retrospective study of the use of tamsulosin in patients with urethral stones is made, determining its efficacy and comparing the results with other studies.
