Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most important causative agent of blood borne hepatitis in humans. Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) infection occurs either as a co-infection or super infection in HBV carriers. To determine the infection rate of hepatitis D virus in HBs Ag positive blood donation and chronic hepatitis B in Baqubahprovince, Diyala, Iraq. Serum samples were collected from 132 HBsAg positive blood donations (107 males and 25 females, age range 19-67 years) from Blood Bank and 132 serum samples of chronic hepatitis B patients (74 male and 58 female, age range 19-67 years) from Baqubah Teaching Hospital, during the period from August 2016 till April 2017.All of them were tested forHBsAg, HBcIgM, HBcIgG, HDVIgM and HDVIgG using separate ELISA kits and full information were collected from each participant by use questioner sheet which included includes the socio demographic and clinical characteristics such as age, gender, educational level, marital status, occupation, family history, blood transfusion, surgical operation, dental history, endoscope, any medical problem, tattoo and cupping also are recorded. The minimum age group was 19 years and maximum was 68 years. The highest age-specific frequency in studying groups is in the age group of 51-66 years. According to ELISA technique, 3 cases (2.3%) of blood donors and 7 cases of chronic hepatitis B patients (5.3%) had anti-HBcIgM positive; while all of the participants in this study were anti-HBcIgG positive. Among blood donor's group, 6 cases (4.5%) was positive to HDV IgG and they were all males with mean age 50.8 years, while in the chronic hepatitis B patient group only one case (0.81%) was positive to HDV IgG and is in the females group with mean age 63.0 years. A significant difference was noticed with education level, while non-significant differences with other risk factors. The infection rate of hepatitis delta virus in Baqubah city was 4.5% among HBsAg positive blood donors 0.81% among patients with chronic hepatitis B, early screening of HDV is essential for establishing diagnosis and should be depended in the routine work further investigation is needed to validate the findings.
