Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on individual's desire of having an identity and a status. Considering Cicikof's purchase of dead souls to have a status in Gogol's important novel Dead Souls; it may be thought that individual accepts having a status as a means of positioning herself or himself in the social arena. Today, having an identity and a status are also obtained via Instagram, which is a new media base. In fact, individuals purchase followers and likes on Instagram for the purpose of creating popular identities, having a status or becoming a phenomenon on Instagram. The fact that Instagram phenomenas who are followed by individuals and taken as examples, have high number of followers and likes also motivates individuals toward that practice. Thus, in this study, for the purpose of understanding the changing form of having an identity and a status, the purchase of followers and likes on Instagram will be examined and in-depth interviews will be conducted with Instagram users who are selected as sample and Instagram users who provide followers/likes. Hereby it is aimed to understand how Instagram is used as a means of having an identity and a status. It is observed that purchasing followers and likes through Instagram is a popular practice for the individual as a result of the work.
