Title

Gender in the Academy: Recovering the Hidden History of Women's Scholarship on Scrapbooks and Albums.

Authors

Black, Jennifer M.

Abstract

In the early years of material culture studies, persistent hierarchies of high and low framed scholarly examinations of certain media and elevated the study of men's professional work over amateur products created by women. Through a case study of the diverse scholarly works on scrapbooks and albums, this article points to the challenges in reconstituting that literature and argues that the hierarchical privileging of men's work has been mirrored in the academy, resulting in the marginalization of the work of female scholars writing about women's amateur production.
