Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential impact of social networks (SN) in higher education, used as a supplementary resource of classic techno-pedagogical teaching model. In this regard, a comprehensive review of the literature was conducted, which focused on four aspects, namely: (a) definition and classification of SN; (b) research findings reported in the literature on the use of SN as an educational resource; (c) contributions from the SN to the teaching-learning; and (d) use of SN to support the learning process. We conclude first, that the incorporation of SN to education is an incontrovertible fact that sooner or later will eventually be imposed as a techno-educative resource in designing and curriculum development; secondly, the SN can contribute to the process of teaching and learning in college, becoming a dynamic and complementary factor of the classical model of teachercentered education; third, the key to success in this educational approach is based on the motivation and technological competence of teachers to promote and implement the appropriate use of such technology to achieve specific learning objectives; and fourth, the research in this field is still incipient and mainly focuses on descriptive studies, based mainly on the view of teachers and students regarding their experiences and perceptions about the use of the SN in the educational context.
