- Abstract
The family is the principal socialization agent for children. Through interactions with their parents, children learn social and interpersonal skills. There are few studies that examine interactions during a family problem solving task and the majority of these studies are based on self-report measures. We present the development and validation of an observational scale to evaluate parent-child interactions and examine the quality of solutions in family problem solving. The scale included avoidance strategies, time spent in problem solving and avoidance, and quality of problem solving process. We document face validity through the literature review and content validity through an expert panel. Correlations with quality of problem solving showed criterion validity. The scale is a viable tool as evidenced by coder training and consistent inter-rater reliability. The final scale is a useful tool for researchers seeking to examine family problem solving whether for descriptive purposes or to evaluate the impact of interventions that target the improvement of family problem solving.
