Abstract

The rickettsia are bacteria of strictly intracellular growth that are transmitted through arthropod vectors to different mammals which act as reservoirs; among them is man. Murine typhus is caused by Rickettsia typhi that belongs to the group of those that produce typhoid fever; being the vector flea rat (Xenopsylla cheopis). They cause acute, self-limiting, or fatal febrile symptoms if the appropriate treatment is not established. There are few reports of rickettsiosis in Mexico, but it is very likely that this disease is underdiagnosed. This paper reports the case of a patient with murine typhus, which developed jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia with risk factors that came together in the patient.
