Abstract

This article discusses the communication strategies of the non-governmental organization (NGO) Projeto Vivas, which helps people access legal abortion, on the social network Instagram. Based on debates on abortion as a social stigma and feminist epistemologies, we argue that a gender perspective and an understanding of the Public Communication of Science (PSC) as culture are crucial to promote qualified debates about the coverage of abortion as a public health issue in the media. After a content analysis of the Instagram posts made between September 2021 and September 2023 on the project's account, we concluded that the combination of scientific knowledge and welcoming people who are pregnant dialogues with the proposition of a feminist PSC. From this perspective, in which the media plays a preponderant role in the production of meaning about and from science, we encourage the production of new knowledge based on the experiences of gendered bodies, as well as combating the silencing of these same bodies.
