- Abstract
The scientific interest in cognitive deficits associated with schizophrenia coupled with their impact on individuals' quality of life result in the motivation for the development of this article. We aim to: review the course of schizophrenia conceptualization; characterize cognitive functions in the context of the expression of this psychopathology; review the more relevant literature related to the study of attention (considered as a central cognitive dysfunction) and explore the biopsychosocial implications of the expression of cognitive dysfunctions in schizophrenia. In order to reach the objectives outlined, we performed the analysis, organization and operation of information based on a web research carried out through the aid of several databases (Web of science; Scielo; B-on),, where through the combination of operators between the keywords several research equations were carried out. Priority was given to articles under 7 years old There is no doubt that empirical evidence supports a causal relationship between cognitive dysfunction and a transversal influence on the functional capacity of people with schizophrenia. We highlight the challenge of acquiring new skills, adapting the individual to the context and the competent social and occupational behavior. These biopsychosocial implications translate into an impact on the well-being and quality of life of people with schizophrenia.
