A serological study of Dengue Virus and Chikungunya virus: To check the infection and coinfection between these two viruses in Tripura.

Abstract

The two most performed diseases with subclinical infections are Dengue and Chikungunya. Both these diseases are transmitted through the biters of mesquites and Chikungunya are principally transmitted through Aedes Aegypti. The patho physiology includes the Virus to spread through human to mosquito to human cycle of transmission. Typically after five days of the bite any persons refer the diseases. Both these infections can be seen to be increasing in all parts of India. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, body rash, abdominal pain. Unfortunately there is no specific treatment for the Dengue and Chikungunya, prevention is the only medicine in this accord. For this work Blood samples were collected from 400 suspected patients and centrifuge, to separate the serum. This serum was then serologically tested for ELISE for the detection of IgM antibodies. The absorbance density was detected by spectrophotometer. In this study the maximum percentage of Dengue positive cases lies between the 11-20 years age group whereas the maximum percentage of patients having age group 91-100 years were Chikungunya positive. Dengue and Chikungunya were found positive in male patients with 13% and 24% over the female positive patient i.e 10% and 21% respectively. There are 4 % male patients and 3% female who have both Dengue and Chikungunya positive. Under consideration of residential area, Dengue and Chikungunya positive cases were found in rural are with 11% and 28% over 12% and 18% in urban area respectively. As Dengue and CKN viruses are transmitted by the same Aedes species and have similar epidemiological pattern and co circulated it is advisable to test both the viruses.
