Panicum hispidifolium Swallen: avances relacionados con su uso como forrajera.

Abstract

Grasses are widely distributed plants thatplay a fundamental role in many types of ecosystems. Many of these plants belong to the Panicum genus, distributed mainly in tropical areas, and which include, in the case of Colombia, a significant number of species, some of them considered native. This type of plants has not been studied consistently, especially in terms of use as forage, and for some of them there is no evidence of zootechnical use, as is the case of Panicum hispidifolium Swallen, of which there is only evidence of its presence, in the case of Colombia, in the Caribbean region. In a study carried out in the Sabanas subregion of the department of Sucre, in Colombia, this grass was characterized in terms of biomass production, quality, morphology, and confirmation of taxonomic identification, taking advantage of evidence of its presence in the area. The study evaluated the effect of different cutting ages (21,28 and 35 days). The grass was classified as Panicum cf. hispidifolium Swallen since its classification was not 100% confirmed due to some of its characteristics. On the other hand, its forage potential was confirmed, by showing adequate DM production and sufficient nutritional composition to maintain acceptable productive performances. It is concluded that the species showed conditions to be used as forage under the conditions of the study; however, other studies should be carried out to expand the foundations of forage use, such as aspects associated with sowing, grazing, fertilization, susceptibility to pests. and diseases, conservation, among others.
