- Abstract
This article examines the efficacy of condoms and spermicides used correctly and consistently at every act of intercourse. Consumers may safely place more confidence in good-quality condoms, when these are used carefully and conscientiously along with spermicides. Consistent, conscientious use of condoms along with spermicide should guarantee contraceptive protection as efficacious as that provided by combined oral contraceptives. Unlike hormonal methods, the combined perfect use of good-quality condoms and spermicides also provides excellent protection against sexually transmitted diseases, including human immunodeficiency virus. The emphasis on the perfect use should be noted, omitting precautions entails the much higher risks of contraception and infection associated with unprotected coital exposure. In addition, the spermicide should exhibit at least the spermicidal efficacy prescribed in the former International Planned Parenthood Agreed Test for Total Spermicidal Power and spermicides should be rubber-compatible, not oil-based. Good-quality condoms can be defined as those that in practice resist breakage. An International Condom Standard minimizes the prevalence of weak condoms by prescribing minimum air-inflation properties in sample batches.
