- Abstract
Study was carried out to evaluate biological activities of four species of family Poaceae viz., P. antidotale Retz., Festuca glauca Lam., Lasiurus scindicus Henr. and Stipagrostis plumosa L. The comparison was made among their extracts made in polar, slightly polar and non-polar solvents. Qualitative analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, steroids and cardiac glycosides in most of the extracts. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH scavenging assay and results revealed that methanol extracts of F. glauca (71 %), L. scindicus (71 %) and ethanol extract of F. glauca (71 %) possesses maximum scavenging activity. Phenol hypochlorite method was used for antiurease activity and thiourea was used as a standard. Methanol, ethanol and water extracts of all selected species displayed almost 50 % urease inhibition potential. Antibacterial activity was evaluated by agar disc- diffusion assay and plant extracts were examined against five bacterial strains. It was observed that F. glauca showed maximum activity and thus could be considered as effective antibacterial agent in pharmaceutical industries. Overall, F. glauca and L. scindicus methanolic extracts displayed maximum biological potential and hence can be examined further at clinical grounds to confirm their efficacy.
