Abstract

The influence of first trimmings in dendrometral variables of four species of Pinus spp. in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, are quantified and compared. Monitored clusters comprised the species Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii, Pinus greggii Engelm, Pinus taeda L., Pinus patula Schlechtd. & Cham. Data were retrieved from forest census and trunk analysis by diametral classes through the Sturges method. Six disks per tree were obtained at absolute heights 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of commercial height, and diameter of 8 cm. In the case of diametral distribution, normality of data was taken by Shapiro-Wilk test. Growth rates of ring breadth for two years anteceding trimming at heights 0.1 m, 1.3 m and 25% are reduced for all species. Growth rate at heights 50% and 75% tend to stabilize for the same period, with the exception of Pinus elliottii. At 100% of commercial height, Pinus elliottii had a greater growth than that of Pinus taeda, approximately 50% when compared to the former. Effects of late trimming between the trees affected growth for the different species analyzed.
