Abstract

The article recounts an incident where a physician rebuked a patient's husband for addressing her informally, causing tension in the room. The author, a medical interpreter, reflects on the power dynamics at play and the importance of elevating the status of interpreters in healthcare settings. Through advocacy and education, the author has worked to foster collaboration and mutual respect between interpreters and healthcare providers, leading to improved patient care and confidence among interpreters. The article highlights the transformative impact of dialogue-based interventions and the value of sharing vicarious trauma for self-care and professional growth in the field of medical interpretation.
