- Abstract
The article discusses a study which investigated the changes in the epidemiology of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) in the U.S. to determine whether the fluctuations in survival and prevalence were in fact a result of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The study concluded that 70 percent of OPSCC are caused by HPV infection. It was also found that the survival of HPV-positive patients with OPSCC increased in recent years due to several factors such as decrease in smoking.
