- Abstract
The article discusses the historical overview of placebo effects in medicine. John Haygarth reported the results of the first placebo-controlled trial in 1801. Placebo was first applied in reference to the treatment given to concurrent controls in a trial in 1938. The Hawthorne effect is a phenomenon whereby a subject's performance changes simply because he or she is being studied.
