Abstract

Some materials incorporating a lactone skeleton such as chromen-2-one and pyran-2-one possess a gelation ability for various organic solvents such as alcohol, aromatic, halogenated, and ether ones at low concentration, and liquid crystal properties in bulk state as well, while these molecules do not possess generalized factors in enhancing gelation ability. In order to pursue the driving force for the gelation and clarify the difference between gel and liquid crystal formations, some related materials incorporating chromen-2-one, pyran-2-one, benzofuran-2-one, or benzo[1, 3]oxathiol-2-one, and so on, were prepared and the gelation ability was examined. The results are discussed in terms of their molecular structures.
