Abstract

The method of γ-irradiation grafting of maleic anhydride onto polyethylene films was studied. The γ-irradiation causes molecular bond scission and produces free radical sites on the polyethylene. This process was carried out at different γ-irradiation doses from a Cobalt-60 source and different concentration of MAH. The microstructure of modified polymer film has been characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and the thermal properties of the grafted products were also studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The degree of hydrophilicity was investigated into water contact angle and surface free energy determination. The surface free energies of the grafted polymer films were studied by measuring the contact angles of water and diiodomethane.
