Abstract

The article discusses the book "Who cares? Life on welfare in Australia" by Eve Vincent, which explores the experiences of individuals on welfare in Australia. The book focuses on two approaches used by the Australian government to control beneficiaries: compulsory money management through Basic Cards and the ParentsNext program. The use of Basic Cards disproportionately affected Indigenous populations, with 73% of users being Indigenous. The book also examines the experiences of individuals in Ceduna with the Basic Card and the challenges they faced. Additionally, it discusses the ParentsNext program and the structural violence experienced by participants. The book provides an in-depth exploration of conditional welfare and the impact of surveillance and state control.
