- Title
Alterations of neutrophil L-selectin and CD18 expression by tobacco smoke: implications for periodontal diseases.
- Abstract
The article presents a study that examined the effects of in vitro smoke exposure and nicotine alone in neutrophils from smoker and non-smokers. The authors say that it's well-known that smoking is a major risk in the development of periodontal diseases and outcome of surgical therapies. They conclude by saying that there was shedding of surface L-selectin when peripheral blood neutrophils were exposed in vitro to short-term concentration of cigarette smoking.
