Abstract

This article focuses on a strong relation between increasing age and the presence of multiple pathology. According to an audit of dental charts at the Ohio State University, Ohio, 80% of the elderly report the presence of at least one chronic condition. Over 13% of the elderly living in the community, along with the 5-6% residing in long term care institutions, have limitations in major activities of daily living. These functional limitations, in concert with the polypharmacy used to manage the elderly's multiple chronic conditions, present the dental profession with a unique patient management and dental care delivery concerns.
