Abstract

The article reports that apoptosis of neutrophils can be produced in the peripheral blood of a healthy subject when the blood sample is left at room temperature after about one day and is also seen rarely in patients with infections or in chronic fatigue syndrome. Physicians should be aware of this peculiar phenomenon to decrease the dosage of drugs or to avoid the use of hematopoietic growth forms such as G-CSF that are not beneficial in this setting. A case study of a four-year old boy with acute lymphoblastic leukemia has also been cited.
