- Abstract
The world as whole, and all regions of the world, became much healthier in the decades following the Second World War. However, there are five global health challenges that are worsening: tobacco abuse, obesity, AIDS, Tuberculosis and malaria. The Global Fund represents purchasing power for new drugs, diagnostics and vaccines on behalf of countries and communities that are too poor to purchase such products. It also encourages its applicants to build operational research into their programs and to include budget lines to fully support this research. However there exists the need for substantially increased research both in product development and operations.
