Abstract

The article discusses the influence of gender differences of elementary school children in preferring and using strategies to solve multidigit addition and subtraction story problems. Two research studies are presented revealing that children using invented strategies likely possess advance understanding than those using standard algorithms. It is noted that more boys use invented strategies than girls, and children's reasons in choosing strategies relate to accuracy, speed and ease of use.
