Abstract

The article focuses on the quantitative SPECT of DMSA uptake by the kidneys. Since its introduction in the early 1970s, the technetium dimercapto-succinic acid (Tc-DmSA) scan has been used as a static imaging agent to detect cortical defects in the kidneys. Scintigraphy provides an image of the functional renal parenchyma, and the renal uptake of Tc-DMSA has been shown to correlate well with the effective renal plasma flow (ERPF), glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and creatinine clearance. Thus the renal uptake of Tc-DMSA provides a practical index for evaluation of individual renal function.
