Presents a report on the molecular targets of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and its interaction with an intercellular protein, Jab 1. Background on cytokines, multifunctional mediators that modulate immune activity by receptor-mediated pathways; Details on how MIF binds Jab 1 and inhibits effects activated by the protein; Conclusion that MIF acts broadly to negatively regulate Jab1-controlled pathways, and that this interaction may provide a molecular basis for MIF activities.
