Abstract
Discusses the disease atherosclerosis, a disease of the large arteries, and is a primary cause of heart disease and stroke. Discussion of the environmental and genetic risk factors associated with atherosclerosis; Aetiological complexity of the disease which has impeded the progress in defining the cellular and molecular interactions involved; Suggestion that atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory condition that can be converted into an acute clinical event by plaque rupture and thrombosis.
