- Abstract
This article presents the patient education page which examines acute sinusitis which affects millions of people annually. Infection of the paranasal sinuses is usually the result of a cold but can be due to a malformation of the nose or a sign of a general infection of the body. Acute sinusitis is often the result of a bacterial infection though it can also be caused by a fungus infection or parasites. The signs and symptoms include fever, painful sinuses, nasal discharge, cough and sore throat and a general sense of illness. Diagnosis is generally made on physical examination.
