Copy-and-Paste.
- Authors
Hirschtick, Robert E.
- Abstract
The article discusses the shortcomings of electronic medical records and replicates their failings in format. The system automatically begins notes with repetitive and meaningless phrases like "The patient complains." It also has a copy and paste feature that results in notes being repeated day after day. All doctors in the system can contribute, with interns notes getting the same prominence as that of specialists. Supervising doctors can approve comments from students without having read them. The system creates unwieldy and verbose notes that are less informative than those written by hand.
