- Authors
Neria, Yuval; Sullivan, Gregory M.
- Abstract
The article looks at the mental health effects of being indirectly exposed to mass trauma through the media. Particular focus is given to studies on the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among individuals exposed to the September 11, 2001 attacks. A national survey found that exposure to televised live broadcast during the attacks was linked with higher risk for short-term PTSD symptoms. The role of fear conditioning and extinction in PTSD pathophysiology is tackled.
